We set out to redesign the header of BostonGlobe.com with simplicity and ease of use in mind. We started with mobile, where we were able to drastically reduce the amount of space the header takes up, making the content much more visible on load. We also made the touch targets larger and designed them to look more like buttons to increase engagement.

We introduced a “takeover” menu that presents a clear picture of the key topic areas of the site and is available sitewide. Since launch, we’ve seen an increase in recirculation and a decrease in bounce rate. I handled the visual design based on UX concepts developed in collaboration with colleague Brendon Attebury.
