“Chasing Bayla” is the story of one man’s quest to save the right whale from extinction.
We knew we had powerful photos and videos that illustrated the plight of Bayla, a whale that Michael Moore worked to save. Instead of having the visuals interspersed throughout the piece, we decided to provide a clean reading experience. But we also wanted to give the user the option of experiencing the story entirely in visuals, or to switch back and forth while reading the story.
I worked with developer Russell Goldenberg to create a design that allows the user to easily toggle between the two “sides” of the story — text and visuals.
With all of the great photos and videos we had with the story, we felt that illustrations would bring an added emotional dimension. I asked illustrator Matthew Woodson to create layered illustrations that would allow for subtle animations using CSS.
